GEORGSHAUSEN PROTOKOL
We have acquired a new database from our Serbian contact, Stasa Cvetkovic. This is a census of Georgshausen with many interesting details about the residents, including some about education and military service. We do not know the exact date, but it appears to be from the late 1930s or early 1940s. The original was in the Serbian language and very difficult to read. Stasa has compiled it into an Excel spreadsheet. We have priced it at $25 to try to recover our cost.
OBITUARIES
Kay Lambrecht, an early Zichydorfer in Regina. Ed Dormuth, father of our Secretary-Treasurer, Miles Dormuth.
NEW IN THE LIBRARY
The author of Last Waltz on the Danube, Ali Botein-Furrevig, is a Jewish Holocaust scholar who became aware of the post WW II plight of the Donauschwaben through one of her mentors who came from Palanka in Batschka. She correctly observes that the Holocaust of the Jews during WW II was only one of many genocides in history and they all deserve equal denunciation. This is a fairly short read and serves as a good sampler for anyone new to this topic. The first section is a brief summary of the history of the region, the immigration of the Germans, and the events of WW II and the few years immediately following. There are a few specific details about Batschka and Palanka, but it is mostly pretty general. The second section is the personal story of her mentor’s aunt, whom she met at his funeral. This lady had endured all the post-war suffering of the Donauschwaben of Yugoslavia. Again, her story serves as a brief summary of many similar stories in much longer formats. A short final section deals more generall y with crimes against humanity, listing many other occurrences and providing much food for thought.
I have just received Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II by Keith Lowe. I will read it and place a review on our Facebook page before placing it in the library. Please give me three or four weeks to fit it in with the rest of my to-do list. Another reviewer calls it “A breathtaking, numbing account of the physical and moral desolation that plagued Europe in the late 1940s. Authoritative but never dry, stripping away soothing myths of national unity and victimhood, this is a painful but necessary historical task superbly done.”

2014 BANAT TOUR
I am planning another Banat group tour for 2014. Although the dates are not yet set in stone, it will probably be from June 1 to 22. If you think you might be interested, please email me at the address below so I can put you on the contact list. There is no financial commitment until I ask for a small deposit in the fall to see who is really serious. The balance will be due early in 2014. As a rough estimate, expect to spend about $5,000. About 1/3 will be for air fare, 1/3 for hotels and meals that you will pay yourself while on the trip, and 1/3 for the bus charter and other expenses of the tour. You can check out our past tours at

ZVA REGINA BRANCH MEETING
Our fall meeting will be at my home, 2274 Baldwin Bay, Regina, on Thursday, September 26, at 7:30 pm. Mary Ann Hueser will brief us on the happenings at the Mount Angel conference the preceding week. She should also have copies of the Banat map that Ray Borschowa created in AutoCad. I might even be persuaded to open a bottle of wine or two. Please mark your calendar, and bring along a Zichydorf friend.
